Our Mission

Global Writes is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote literacy, communication and collaboration among young people through the integration of the arts and technology resources. The organization leads or assists in the development and support of projects and programs with local school districts, independent schools, government agencies and other nonprofit groups. In our programs and projects, we work to create opportunities for students to develop as creative writers, and to share their original pieces in workshops and through performance. We promote the use of a variety of digital technologies, including videoconferencing and web collaboration tools to provide venues for sharing and performing that bridge the boundaries of school, community, region and even nation. History

Global Writes was formed as a result of a model program developed in the Bronx, NY, ten years ago called Bronx Writes. The program is a poetry writing and performance project that culminates with a Poetry Slam Competition via video conferencing. The project combines original poetry writing, the art of performance and the use of video conferencing technology to promote standards based literacy, communication and the use of technology. The success of this project lies in its ability to engage students in writing and performing original poetry works and receiving immediate feedback from audiences around the world. The project is a collaboration with a local school district and an arts organization. Poets from local arts partners work with students and teachers on poetry writing and performances. The program model has been successfully replicated in several schools in Queens, NY; Newark, NJ and Nyack Middle School in Rockland County, NY., Yonkers HS, Westchester County, Chicago Ill, San Francisco, CA. and Lewiston/Auburn Maine.
